20 APRIL 2017 – EUROPEAN DAY OF MEDIATION FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION IN SEVILLE
The European Day on Mediation for Social Inclusion in Seville held on the 20th of April is the founding act of the European area of mediation for social inclusion: the formal event that marked its birth.
The magnificent pavilion of the Three Culture Foundation gave it its historical foothold with the mingling of cultures that illuminated 12th century Andalucía, the Andalucía of Averroes and Maimonides that later inspired Thomas Aquinas. By passing on the legacy of Ancient philosophy and the contributions of the Arabic, Islamic and Jewish civilisations, Andalucía gave birth to an Enlightened Europe and the celebration of the mind. With Italian Renaissance, it enabled the emergence of humanism in Europe. This is the Europe born of the meeting of cultures which is still true to this day.
The European area of mediation for social inclusion found its geographical foothold in Sevilla and Andalucía: borderlands in contact with Southern countries, migrations and cultures.
Frontier areas such as Sicily and Mediterranean countries at the gates of Europe, like suburbs on the fringe of large cities are at the heart of the challenges facing Europe: reception of migrants and their cultures, creation of a new citizenship and the endless possibilities arising from these encounters.
This is where mediation for social inclusion through its intercultural dimension finds a ground for creativity and development.
Through a partnership with Sevilla townhall, the regional administration, the 3 Culture Foundation, the Mediator for the region of Andalucía, key actors from civil society organisations, citizens… all involved with the ACOGE Foundation to make Seville and Andalucía a land of encounter welcoming migrants, the European area for social mediation has also found its political foothold based on shared values of hospitality, humanism and openness to Others.
Here mediation is not solely the responsibility of the mediators, it is a responsibility shared by all political stakeholders, local administrations and citizens.
These three footholds – historical, geographical, political – like the “3” cultures and the “Third Party” of mediation represent three strong pillars in the domain of mediation for social inclusion.
